The Wildstorm universe has many similarities to the real world. The main difference is that the Wildstorm universe is home to Super Powered Beings. There are various explainations for the powers held by these beings. The Wildstorm universe and the real world share a similar history; many real world historical events are mentioned in Wildstorm stories if only to set a story telling the history of Wildstorm characters.

Some other major differences include fictional locations, cities and nations mixed in with references to real world places in the Wildstorm universe. Sentient alien beings (such as Kherubim and Drahn) and even interstellar societies are generally known to exist, aliens such as the Kherubim have affected Earth's history since ancient times, their heroics and long life spans have led to legends and myths about gods, demons and heavenly places. In modern times the arrival of alien spacecraft is not uncommon on earth.

Technologies which are only theoretical in the real world such as faster-than-light travel, artificial intelligence and teleportation are functional and reproducible, though they are often portrayed as highly experimental and difficult to achieve. Modern history in the Wildstorm universe often steps further away from reality to tell stories such as the takeover of the United States Of America by the lethal superhuman team, the Authority.
