The Sword possesses a Devotion Stone which, similarly to Union's Justice Stone, was surgically implanted in his body (in the Sword's case, in his stomach). The stone absorbs ambient energy and converts it into a powerful biologically-based energy source. Unlike Union, however, the Sword has not learned to metabolize the energy within his body, and is forced to use a plasma energy weapon called the Devotion Blade to direct his stone's power. The Sword is also able to travel between parallel universes, and can take either a handful of colleagues or a limited amount of apparatus with him.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT!
Bio:
Fire From Heaven
It was the Sword's ability to slice a path through dimensions that first brought him to the attention of Damocles. After extensive and painful surgery, Damocles' scientists determined that this talent could not be duplicated, so the Sword, once healed, became Damocles' herald. He established a beachhead on each new world he reached, preparing for the arrival of his master, then watched as Damocles devoured each new universe his herald had intruded upon.

At the start of the Fire from Heaven event, the Sword dispatched interdimensional Bounty Hunters to capture another creature capable of travel between dimensions through a biological process, the Qeelocke, and later to secure Dr. Tsung and ascertain the whereabouts of Sigma. When their attempts failed, the Sword took field command of the mission, seizing both Dr Tsung and Gen13's Freefall. The Sword's mission also took him to New York (where he almost killed Stormwatch's Winter), to the rogue island of Gamorra (where he met the distasteful Kaizen Gamorra) and finally to the moon to oversee construction of the great engine that would tear the moon from its orbit and thus wreak havoc on Earth. However, Damocles' plans fell short when the Sword's own alternate counterpart, Union, and the other heroes of the Wildstorm Universe showed up. After a titanic battle across the airless surface of the moon, Union apparently killed the Sword by shattering his Devotion Stone and absorbing its power.

The New Dynamix
How the wounded Sword escaped the moon remains a mystery, but he resurfaced years later as a high-profile superhero in San Francisco. He has been working with Love Rocket almost from the start of her search for missing super-powered beings (SPBs). Love Rocket apparently knows about the Sword's involvement with Damocles, but believes that the Sword was being manipulated at the time. That said, she still finds him arrogant, aggressive and self-righteous, and doesn't entirely trust him.

Behind his new superhero facade and soft drinks endorsements, the Sword has his own sinister agenda, which Love Rocket and her friend Black Halo (formerly Omni) are only just beginning to uncover.
