Affiliation: International Operations
Former Alias: Topkick
Former Affiliation: Team 7, Gen 13

Vital Stats
Species: Human/Gen 12
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 167 lbs
Date of Birth: unknown
Birthplace: New York City, New York, United States of America
Known Family:
  • Son: Robert Lane

Powers/Abilities:
Lynch was exposed to the Gen-Factor during his Team 7 days, which granted him extremely powerful psychic powers. However, they quickly raged out of control (and cost him his left eye) and were subsequently repressed. For years, Lynch was extremely hesitant to use his Gen-Factor, as it quickly overpowered him. Lynch's greatest strength is arguably his incredibly tactical mind. It is these critical thinking skills that made Lynch one of the most powerful and dangerous players in the espionage world. Recently, though, in his attempts to infiltrate and destroy Tao's criminal syndicate, Lynch was more liberal with his Gen-active powers and even appeared to be seeking ways to enhance them.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
Bio:
John Lynch was raised a Midwestern farm boy. He made his way out of the heartland and into the US Navel Academy at Annapolis. After graduating at the top of his class, he received his commission in the marines. He found his place and became a highly decorated special warfare ('spec-war') operator.

With his outstanding record, the brass at the Pentagon thought it was only a matter of time before their golden boy got his stars and a seat on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, but John had his own plans: An adventurer at heart, he walked out on 'Uncle Sam' to work with Caroline MacArthur and her family's philanthropic foundation. Though the razor's-edge world of covert ops was behind him, he still managed to find his share of excitement and notoriety in his new vocation: In 1968, on an expedition up the Amazon to the Incan Temple of Viracocha, Lynch and Caroline MacArthur were attacked by a German paramilitary group called the Aryan Youths, along with the super-powered mercenary Helmut. Lynch and Caroline defeated Helmut, gaining Caroline's foundation the Sword of Viracocha and bringing Lynch to the attention of Miles Craven.

Team 7
Craven recruited Lynch into International Operations, and made him case officer in charge of the agency's new special ops unit, Team 7. He took part in testing and selecting members for the team, and later served as their leader in the field. The exposure of Team 7 to the Gen-Factor granted John powerful psychic abilities, but cost him his left eye, the trust of his teammates and ultimately his wife and son. His wife left him, and later died. His son was kidnapped by other former members of Team 7 to prevent him falling into Craven's hands, and was eventually placed in a foster home under the name Robert Lane. While most of his teammates went on the run from IO, Lynch stayed with the agency, determined to "play the game better than Craven".

With deception and intrigue the order of the day at IO, John realized upon reaching the post of Head of Operations that he would need someone to watch his back. He recruited Christine Blaze, a Delta Force veteran who he had previously assessed for inclusion in Team 7. Their working relationship blossomed into something much more: In the world of shadows and lies, the two of them forged a bond of faith and trust. they became lovers, and Lynch trusted Blaze with secret operations that he couldn't afford to disclose to anyone else. The last mission he sent her on was to infiltrate a Coda chapter allied with Dominique Faust and Cardinal Lazarus.

Gen 13
While Blaze was still undercover, Lynch turned against IO: He destroyed Ivana Baiul's new Project: Genesis program and rescued several of the Gen-13 teenagers being used as Guinea pigs. Unbeknown to Lynch, these teens included his long-lost son, Robert.

Lynch went underground with the Gen-13 kids for a number of years, surfacing several times but always staying one step ahead of IO, partly thanks to the enduring loyalty of former subordinates such as Frank Colby. Lynch stayed with Gen¹³ in his house in La Jolla, San Diego, acting as their mentor. Lynch was pivotal in several adventures that took place when the team was based in that house. He helps fight the villain Helmut who believes Lynch holds one of the keys to an ancient warship. From behind the scenes he assists in the defeat of a rampaging, superpowered gorilla. He leads the boys in a raid to save the girls (and their virtue) from a manical man in a boy's body.

Unfortunately I.O. discovers the house and destroys it, along with the artificial intelligence that served as the team's maid and backup defense system. For some time, the team hid with a scientific expedition that Lynch knew about (but they found a spaceship and half the team was lost in space). The team kept moving around and Lynch started to display paranoid behaviour. When several Gen¹³ members were taken into the future, Caitlin Fairchild encountered a future version of John Lynch, an insane and dangerous man. Returning to the present, Fairchild saw Lynch slowly becoming the man she had seen in the future, causing a rift between Lynch and the team. This rift finally became so strong that Lynch left the team and Alex Fairchild, Caitlin's father and another Team 7-member, took over as their mentor. Alex died shortly afterwards and Lynch returned. Caitlin finally told Lynch about his future version, but added that recent events had shown her that he was a different man than the man she encountered in the future.

TAO & Earl
Shortly afterwards the villain Tao kidnapped Lynch and took his place. Lynch meanwhile was made to think that he was an overweight man named Earl, living a normal life. Gen¹³ defeated TAO, while Lynch slowly recovered his memories and lost the extra weight. Gen¹³ searched for him without any success. Lynch contacted them, telling them that he was planning on living a normal life as Earl for a while together with the nurse who had been taking care of him during these past few months.

Sleeper
In reality, Lynch had become convinced that he was the only one who could stop the enigmatic Tao. He returned to I.O. and regained his post as a Director of Operations. It was during that time that he placed his former star pupil, Holden Carver, undercover in TAO's syndicate. Several months later, the Divine Right incident led US government to shut down International Operations. Lynch agreed to work for the Department of Paranormal Science Investigations (PSI). He maintained regular contact with Holden Carver.

In the fall of 2002, Lynch decided to extract Carver, feeling that placing him under cover was a mistake. He recruited Cole Cash, his former Team 7 teammate, to help him. The plan went awry when Lynch got shot through the head by a mind-controlled Cash. Although his Gen-Factor saved his life, he remained in coma for over a year. Late 2003, he emerged from coma. Shortly afterwards, the Authority took over United States. He persuaded his new superiors to allow him to recreate I.O., this time as Internal Operations, a security agency dedicated to hunting down TAO and the members of the Syndicate.

John Lynch continued to head I.O, with Marc Slayton acting as his second-in-command.

WorldStorm
Following the Worldstorm, a new division of IO named Tabula Rasa appears to have cloned John Lynch. This clone followed in his progenitor's footsteps, helping a new batch of Gen-active teens (clones of the original Gen-13) escape from IO and losing an eye in the process.

World's End
In the aftermath of Armageddon, the original John Lynch sets out to reuinte Team 7 to finish TAO off once and for all.
