Overview:
England is a country that is part of the United Kingdom. Its inhabitants account for more than 83% of the total UK population, whilst its mainland territory occupies most of the southern two-thirds of the island of Great Britain. England is bordered by Scotland to the north, Wales to the west and the North Sea, Irish Sea, Celtic Sea, Bristol Channel and English Channel. The capital is London, the largest urban area in Great Britain, and the largest urban zone in the European Union by many measures.

England became a unified state in the year 927 CE and takes its name from the Angles, one of the Germanic tribes who settled there during the 5th and 6th centuries. It has had a significant cultural and legal impact on the wider worldbeing the place of origin of the English language, the Church of England, and English law, which forms the basis of the common law legal systems of countries around the world. In addition, England was the birth place of the Industrial Revolution, thus being the first country in the world to industrialise. It is home to the Royal Society, which laid the foundations of modern experimental science. England has the world's oldest parliamentary system, and consequently, other constitutional, governmental and legal innovations that stemmed from England have been widely adopted by other nations.

The Kingdom of England (including Wales) continued as a separate state until 1 May 1707, when the Acts of Union, putting into effect the terms agreed in the Treaty of Union the previous year, resulted in political union with the Kingdom of Scotland to create the united Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1800, Great Britain was united with Ireland through another Act of Union 1800 to become the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. In 1921, the Irish Free State was created, and the Royal and Parliamentary Titles Act in 1927 officially established the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which exists today.

History:
  • 1215: The Daemonite Hightower, as King John, signs the Magna Carta, signaling the first step towards England's rebirth. (Historical accounts, WildC.A.T.s #20. How Hightower could act as both Genghis Khan and King John at the same time is unclear.)
  • 1500s: Brother of Orwell, the human later known as 'Mother' and his brother were the children of a time traveller and a woman from the future. The two children were inspired by their father's tales and built their own time machine. They travelled to the end of time and witnessed the robotic intelligence that evolved from Spartan and Mister Majestic creating a new universe after the death of the current one. Orwell became inspired, believing that if he could reprogram Spartan he could control the form of the new universe and become its God. His brother tried to stop him, but Orwell tried to kill him. The resulting struggle crashed their timeship and 'Mother' landed in 16th century England, where Mother was found by Dr. John Dee, who thought he was a fallen angel (the timecrash had put parts of Mother outside of time: his right leg and his left upper torso, arm and side of his face were invisible and intangible). Mother and Dee gathered metahumans and founded the first Establishment. They also started genetic experiments which would result in Equus 400 years later. Mother planned on using these warriors against Orwell when he would reappear. Mother was immortal (a side-effect of him being partly outside of time) and had an artificial left hand constructed with hidden weaponry inside it.
  • 1920: England makes first contact with Sliding Albion, who are looking for new territories to colonize. They fail to conquer WildStorm's Earth and instead begin a term of tentative cultural exchange.
  • 1950s: The Establishment obtains a miniature, caged baby universe and uses it to power their secret facility in Rendlesham. (The Authority: World's End #15)
  • StormWatch Prime investigates the bombing of a jet over middle England. The bomb was laced with a crude version of the Gen-Factor. The newly returned Kaizen Gamorra claimed responsibility. (StormWatch Vol 1 #40)

Alternate Versions:
  • Sliding Albion: England is a colony of the alien Blue.
