From acclaimed novelist and screenwriter John Ridley (Three Kings, Everybody Smokes in Hell) and hot new artist Ben Oliver (Puncture) comes the WildStorm event of the year! The Authority, Earth's last of defense, have performed God-like acts in their defense of the planet, whether defeating ancient gods or fending off interdimensional invasion forces. But these brave acts haven't always endeared them to many in power...particularly in the United States. The President, tired of being embarrassed by what he views as a bunch of costumed freaks, sets a plan in motion that could very well destroy the Authority from the inside...a plan so cunning and unexpected, it'll shake the Authority to their very core. And with an unexpected threat from the future on Earth's doorstep, if could very well mean global extinction.

SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
Synopsis
Jack Hawksmoor and his Authority team confront the President of the United States to convince him to pull back US warships from the Pacific Rim. Jack warns the President that the Authority will do it if he doesn't.

Begrudgingly, the President concedes to the Hawksmoor's demands, and leaves the Oval Office to meet with Dr. Ledbedder. The President is seeking ways to rid himself of the Authority.

The team unwinds on the Carrier before being called to an incident involving three super-powered beings. The Doctor recognises them as Tisiphone, Megaera and Alecto – The Erinyes, mythical punishers of sinners. One by one, the Erinyes take down the Authority, and seemingly kill Swift. The Erinyes confront the Doctor and punish him for his sins. A mysterious combatant appears and attacks the Erinyes. There is a brief verbal exchange, and then the Erinyes depart.

The President and Dr. Ledbedder meet. Ledbedder assures the President that the Authority have in fact been dealt with, and that their own human nature will now be their undoing.

On the Carrier, the Engineer informs Jack his spine is broken. Jack asks the Doctor to heal him, but the Doctor has turned back to drugs in an effort to redeem himself from the sins the Erinyes made him aware of. The Engineer also informs Jack that she doesn’t think she can do anything for him herself. Jack snaps at the Engineer, who in turn leaves.

Midnigher tries to comfort the Engineer, before the pair enter the conference room where the mysterious combatant introduces himself to the team as Danny Chan.

Unbeknownst to the team, Swift is alive, but is a prisoner of Ledbedder, who proceeds to torture her.

On the Carrier, the Engineer chats with Danny, and the pair flirt and embrace. Jack witnesses the flirting.

In the meantime, widespread madness seems to have consumed society, with people killing, raping, and looting en mass. The President appears helpless to prevent the spread of the epidemic.

Midnighter approaches Danny in the gym on the Carrier. They begin to spar, and Danny manages to trick Midnighter's tactical enhancements, and throws him to the ground, where the pair embrace before Danny leaves the room.

Frantic, the President contacts Lebdedder over the mass killings, rapings and looting. He fears for the worst, and needs the Authority active again. In lieu of the Authority, the President suggests that Jackson King, former leader of StormWatch, be placed in charge of resolving the chaos.
Jack calls for the Engineer. He verbally snaps at her for her lack of progression in healing him. Jack confronts the Engineer with footage of her embrace with Danny. She replies and leaves Jack.

A guilt-ridden Midnighter confronts Apollo over his encounter with Danny. Apollo flips and punches him through a wall, a mere few feet away the Engineer and Danny.

The Doctor, high on heroin, starts to hallucinate about the Erinyes.

Jackson King enters the Carrier, surveys the situation, and sets off the ships alarms in order to get the team's attention. Jackson briefs Jack on the choatic global situation and takes control.

The Doctor appears, warning the team that he has seen the future, and that there is no future. Danny tries to dismiss it as the ramblings of someone high, the Engineer realises that there may be a connection to what the Doctor saw and the situation unfolding Earth.

The team deduce that a destructive force from the future is causing the mass despair engulfing them. They establish the force is being drawn to them by a man without hope. While they try to establish his location, news breaks that France has launched a nuclear strike - against themselves.

The Authority arrive in France. Apollo and the Doctor attend to he launched missiles, while the reminder of the team deal with the troops on the ground.

Having stopped the threat in France, the team re-assembles on the Carrier, where the Engineer reveals she has tracked the source of the problem to the Gobi Desert. Jackson assembles the team and opens a shift-door from the Carrier.

The team encounter a man, who informs them he is from the future. He has already seen this moment once before, and knows what the Authority will say and do. He tells them the future is bleak, filled with death, disease and suffering. The future is dead. To stop it apocalyptic future from occurring, he is going to end the past.

Danny lashes out and the man stops him, injuring him in the process. Jackson orders the Engineer to take Danny back to the medical bay on the Carrier, while the others attack the mysterious man from the future.

The man deflects Apollo’s solar attack toward Jackson King. The man informs the team he did not come unprepared and reveals an army of clones on the horizon.

On the Carrier, the Engineer discovers that Danny is an android, who then reveals himself to have been sent by one of their enemies to divide the squad. The Engineer lashes out and destroys the android.

In the Gobi Desert, the remainder of the squad battle the clones, while the Doctor confronts the mystery man.

Lebdedder continues his torture of Swift, who is pleading with him to end her suffering. Ledbedder reveals Swift's torture was not his intention. He simply wished to break her will in order to make her stronger, and then sets her free.

The Engineer, disillusioned with this recent series of events, tells Jack that there is no point in fighting. How can the Authority fight human nature? How can the Authority fight itself, she asks? Jack tries to snap her out of her circular logic, but the Engineer opens a door and returns to the desert.

Jack snaps himself out of his depression, stumbles to the floor, and orders the Carrier to open a shift-door to Sao Paulo, Brazil. The Engineer appears before the mysterious man of the future. But as he gloats, he suddenly loses his ability to see. Jack kicks the man senseless, and the team start to get the better hand of the clones. The man informs the Authority that all they have done is condemn mankind to the future the tried to prevent.
Jack asks the man how his team can prevent the future, but the man explains the solution is beyond mankind’s ability. There is no help for mankind, as he will have to live with the consequences of his own actions. The man then kills himself.

Swift contacts the team, and informs them she has a task to perform before she can rejoin them. She later confides in Jackson that she had to pass on a feeling of hope to the infant who would one day grandmother the man whom the Authority defeated. Swift forgets the rest and deems it unimportant.

Jack shakes hands with Jackson, and leaves to rejoin the team.
